Governing For The People
The Congress is back open.
House Democrats will continue to fight hard to make life better for everyday Americans. Always and forever.
Watch my speech upon the election of the Speaker of the House:
“House Democrats are continuing to put people over politics by lowering costs, creating better-paying jobs and fighting for safer communities.” -Rep. Jeffries
The Inflation Reduction Act will lower costs, creates millions of good paying jobs, makes health care more accessible, delivers the most significant action on climate in history and dramatically reduces the debt.
Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides federally funded assistance to reduce energy costs, including support for heating bills, home energy efficiency upgrades and heating equipment repairs/replacement. As winter approaches, check your eligibility for the program today.
The ABCs of Democracy
Early on a Saturday morning in January, I addressed my colleagues in the House of Representatives as the Democratic Leader. I discussed how House Democrats are united and ready to get to work and defend the progress that has been made.
Over the last two years, Democrats have been hard at work on behalf of the American people getting big things done. We passed the American Rescue Plan, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, gun safety legislation for the first time in 30 years, the CHIPS and Science Act and the Inflation Reduction Act. It was one of the most consequential Congresses in American history.
The D in Democrat stands for deliver, and we will always do the right thing by the American people.
Free Tax Preparation and Filing Services
1 in 3 Americans with an annual household income of less than $50,000 paid a tax professional or company to do their taxes even though they likely would have gotten that help for free. Residents of the Eighth Congressional District of New York have several valuable resources to help them during the 2024 tax season. Click below to learn more.
Building a Better America
“This bill will provide the largest single federal investment in infrastructure in the history of the Republic” -Rep. Hakeem Jeffries
The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will rebuild the roads, bridges and rails of America. It will expand access to clean drinking water and high-speed internet. Additionally, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will advance environmental justice and tackle the climate crisis. It will also ease inflationary pressures, strengthen supply chains and create good-paying union jobs. Overall, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will grow the economy sustainably and equitably for all Americans in every single zip code.
Making Safer Communities
In New York City, the guns used to commit crime are not initially purchased or manufactured here. They come up the Iron Pipeline, right up I-95, and these weapons of death make their way into our communities. Last year, for the first time in over 30 years, Democrats acted and passed gun safety legislation into law. This legislation made gun trafficking a federal crime for the first time in American history.
But more needs to be done. Our schools have become killing fields. It is time for Congress to put kids over guns.
Putting Money in Your Pocket
House Democrats have been working hard to put money in your pockets. In January, Social Security recipients received the largest single-year benefit increase in over 40 years. You can verify your benefits increase with the Social Security Administration online at SSA.gov or 1-800-772-1213.
House Democrats will always defend Social Security and Medicare. We will not let anyone take the benefits you have worked hard and paid for away. Not now, not ever.
Saving You Money on your Internet
In 2021 Congress Created the Affordable Connectivity Program to help households afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare and more.
Passing the Most Progressive Police Reform Bill in American History
Learn more about my work on the Judiciary Committee to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to end racial profiling, criminalize the chokehold, demilitarize the police, end qualified immunity, create a national standard on excessive use of force, create a database of brutal officers and expand the DOJ Office of Civil Rights’ jurisdiction.
