Washington, DC – Today, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries held a press conference where he highlighted that Democrats remain committed to putting People Over Politics, while extreme MAGA Republicans are threatening to shut down the government so they can jam Trump’s Project 2025 down the throats of the American people.

LEADER JEFFRIES: From the very beginning of the Congress, House Democrats have repeatedly made clear that we will find bipartisan common ground with our Republican colleagues on any issue, whenever and wherever possible, in order to make a difference in the lives of the American people. And throughout this Congress, House Democrats have governed from the minority as if we were in the majority in order to deliver real results for everyday Americans and to solve problems for hardworking American taxpayers. Our commitment remains the same. But we need traditional Republicans to break with MAGA extremists and partner with us so we can keep the government open and meet the needs of the American people. What’s the challenge?

Donald Trump has ordered extreme MAGA Republicans in the House to shut the government down unless they can jam parts of Trump’s Project 2025 agenda down the throats of the American people. That’s a non-starter. We will not let the American people be extorted by extreme MAGA Republicans who are trying to turn back the clock, undermine freedom and suppress the vote because they don’t believe they can make a compelling case to the American people on November 5.
