LEADER JEFFRIES STATEMENT ON LOWER PRESCRIPTION DRUG COSTS
Brooklyn, NY – Today, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement:
In our great country, no American should ever have to choose between the cost of housing, putting food on the table, having clothing on their back or paying for life-saving medication. Two years ago, House Democrats and the Biden-Harris administration struck a decisive blow against the high cost of prescription drugs with passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, giving Medicare the power to negotiate lower prices for older Americans.
Medicare has now reached historic agreements with several companies to bring down the price of 10 frequently used medications that our nation’s seniors and people with disabilities rely on everyday. People on Medicare, including hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers who depend on these prescriptions, will save $1.5 billion in out of pocket costs in just the first year.
Two years ago, every single House Republican voted against giving Medicare this power to negotiate lower prices. Now, they are falling in lockstep with Trump’s Project 2025, which would hike prescription drug costs for millions of Medicare recipients and undo the progress we have made over the last two years to lower the cost of living. House Democrats will never let extreme MAGA Republicans turn back the clock and raise prices for hardworking American taxpayers.
