BROOKLYN, NY – Today, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement: 

The insurrection on January 6, 2021 was a violent attack on the Congress, the Capitol and the Constitution that must never happen again. A dangerous mob, incited by the former president, stormed and desecrated the Citadel of our democracy to hunt down Members of Congress, halt the peaceful transfer of power and overturn the results of a free and fair election. 

Because of the bravery of the Capitol Police and law enforcement community, Congress was able to undertake our constitutional responsibility. We returned to the House Floor and certified the election of President Joe Biden. Thereafter, under the leadership of Chairman Bennie Thompson, the bipartisan House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack worked to uncover the truth and tell the story of that tragic day.

We will never forget the horrific events of January 6, 2021 and we will always honor the brave members of law enforcement who were injured or lost their lives due to the violence incited by the big lie. House Democrats will continue to defend our democracy and present the truth to the American people. All who are responsible for the violent insurrection on January 6 must be held accountable because in this country no one is above the law.
