WASHINGTON, DC – Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement after President Biden’s 2023 State of the Union Address. 

Tonight, President Biden delivered a powerful, historic message of unity and progress. Economic growth is up, inflation is down and over 12 million new jobs have been created – a record in modern American history. The President’s economic agenda is working and House Democrats remain committed to addressing the kitchen-table issues that everyday Americans care about most. 

When the President took office, he inherited a nation in the midst of a deadly pandemic and an economic crisis. Now, just two years later, we are experiencing record-low unemployment coupled with strong and steady economic growth. Whether it’s making unprecedented investments in our roads, bridges and mass transit systems, passing gun safety legislation for the first time in 30 years, bringing manufacturing jobs back home to the United States, enacting health benefits for our veterans, striking a blow against the climate crisis or driving down the high cost of life-saving prescription drugs, Democrats continue to deliver results for the American people. 

As President Biden laid out, there is still work to be done to finish the job. Democrats are willing to work together and extend the hand of partnership to our Republican colleagues wherever possible but we will expose extremism whenever necessary. While Extreme MAGA Republicans are trying to raise taxes and destroy Social Security and Medicare, House Democrats will continue to work with the President to build upon our record of success and fight for lower costs, better-paying jobs and safer communities for everyday Americans.
