WASHINGTON, DC – Following the passage of H.R.1 – the For the People Act of 2021, House Democratic Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement:

“Today, House Democrats passed a once-in-a-generation democracy reform to clean up corruption in Washington and return our government to everyday Americans. Since our election to the majority in 2018, we promised that we were going to fight For The People and bring our democracy back to life. That meant putting the public interest over special interests and ending the era of voter suppression once and for all. In our first 100 days last Congress, we proudly delivered on that promise. 

With democracy once again on the line as Republicans across the country work to undermine the vote, House Democrats are acting with the fierce urgency of now to ensure our right to vote is protected and tackle corruption head on. Today’s vote represents a monumental step toward defending our democracy and making sure that every single American regardless of race, regardless of gender, regardless of ZIP code, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and regardless of religion has an equal opportunity to participate in our democracy.”
