BROOKLYN, NY – Today Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), a key member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on the importance of ride-sharing services in New York City:
“New York City is a hotbed of innovation. Some of the world’s most important tech firms are based here. Uber is a key part of that community.
In addition to providing over 1,000 people in the district I represent with the opportunity to earn additional income by working as Uber drivers, ride-sharing services have played an important role in eradicating discriminatory hailing and providing safe, efficient transportation for everyone, irrespective of background.
For the last several years, policymakers and tech entrepreneurs have worked hard to promote the innovation economy in New York City. It is my hope that the Taxi & Limousine Commission does not pursue any efforts that would hurt our city’s tech industry and undermine the progress we have made in providing improved transportation options and ladders of economic opportunity for all New Yorkers.”
