ABC 7 NY: Up Close with Diana Williams: Immigrant Children

Some say it is immigration reform gone awry. Others say it’s a full-blown humanitarian crisis. Children, under the age of 18, some of them teenage moms with babies, are crossing the border in numbers never seen before. And it is re-focusing the debate on immigration in a way many never imagined.

The children are making their way up north, in search of a better life. But where most of them end up is heartbreaking. No matter which side of the debate you are on, there is no question that something needs to be done to deal with these minors.

Thousands of the children are being held in detention centers and shelters, most of them in Texas and Arizona. But the impact can be felt in New York too, as these children try to reunite with families here. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries joined Diana Williams to discuss the ongoing crisis and his new legislation, The Vulnerable Immigrant Voice Act of 2014.
