Jeffries Lauds President Obama’s Plan To Reduce Gun Violence
Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (NY-8) released the following statement after President Barack Obama announced his plan to reduce gun violence in America:
“I applaud President Obama for demonstrating leadership and courage in tackling the gun violence problem in our nation. The 23 executive orders that, among other things, aim to close background check loopholes, help schools develop emergency preparedness plans and increase access to strengthened mental health services are strong steps forward.
Congress must now pass comprehensive legislation that will ban military style assault weapons, outlaw high capacity ammunition clips and strengthen our ability to end interstate illegal gun trafficking. In the last decade, communities like Bedford-Stuyvesant and East New York have been flooded with illegal guns trafficked into New York City from the deep South and other parts of the country.
We cannot continue to pay the price imposed on us by the pervasive addiction to guns among many in this country. I look forward to working with the President to address the gun violence problem in the most comprehensive way possible.”
