Fort-Greene-Clinton Hill Patch: “Hakeem Jeffries Talks House Budget Committee, Working With Paul Ryan”

“It's not just a numbers game,” the newly elected Congressman said of drafting a budget.

Now that he's settled in as a member of the House of Representatives, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, D-8, is ready to throw down for his constituents.

The newly elected Congressman stopped by Brooklyn Community Board 2's general meeting Wednesday night, thanking members for their support and their willingness to deal with quality of life issues in the area.

Jeffries also noted that he's been appointed to the Budget Committee, which is chaired by Rep. Paul Ryan.

“If he starts acting up, I might just have to get Brooklyn on him,” Jeffries said of his future dealings with the former Republican vice presidential candidate..

“It's not just a numbers game,” he continued, noting that real people would be affected by cuts made by the Committee. He said plans to fight for the interests of those “real people,” including preserving social security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Jeffries was also appointed to the Judiciary Committee. He said he expects to look at issues surrounding immigration reform, as well as gun violence prevention. “The Second Amendment cannot be a shield,” he said.
