Representative Hakeem Jeffries speaks at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo, Texas, calling on Congress to legislate comprehensive immigration reform that is both humane and respects the rule of law and border communities.

It is my honor to represent one of the most diverse districts in the entire Congress. Approximately 33% of the people whom I have the privilege to represent were born outside of the United States of America. Folks from all over the world come to Brooklyn to pursue the American Dream. The foundational model of this country is e pluribus unum: out of many, one. That is what makes America a great country. We are not going to let anyone take that away from us; not now, not ever.

This country was founded by immigrants that came in search of freedom, prosperity and a better life for their families while contributing to the fabric of this great nation economically and culturally. We must reform our broken immigration system and create a pathway toward citizenship for the millions of undocumented hardworking individuals who dream of becoming Americans. This is a matter of utmost urgency for the integrity of our democracy and must be addressed.

I remain focused on serving the needs of Dreamers, TPS holders, farm workers, essential workers, asylum seekers and undocumented individuals in Congress. We must pass comprehensive immigration reform.
