Washington, DC – Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark and Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar held a press availability where they highlighted that the budget scheme House Republicans passed today betrays the middle class by cutting Medicaid while giving huge tax breaks to their billionaire donors.

LEADER JEFFRIES: House Republicans had a clear choice today. They could choose the American people, or they could choose far-right extremism. And when the choice was in front of them on the House Floor, House Republicans chose Donald Trump, they chose Elon Musk and they chose their billionaire puppet masters over the American people. The House Republican budget resolution will set in motion the largest Medicaid cut in American history. It’s outrageous. Children will be devastated. Families, devastated. People with disabilities, devastated. Older Americans, devastated. Hospitals, devastated. Nursing homes, devastated.

The reckless Republican budget will cut taxes up to $4.5 trillion for the wealthy, the well-off and the well-connected, and then they are sticking working-class Americans, middle-class Americans and everyday Americans with the bill. They’re going to slash and burn Medicaid, slash and burn veterans benefits and slash and burn nutritional assistance for children and families. This is what House Republicans are all about. This is the beginning of the budget process. Every single Democrat stood with the American people on the Floor of the House of Representatives, and every single Democrat will stay with the American people, push back against this extreme Republican budget and make sure that every single one of these extreme MAGA Republicans is held accountable for betraying the people they represent.
