LEADER JEFFRIES ANNOUNCES CO-CHAIRS OF STEERING & POLICY COMMITTEE

Washington, D.C. – Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement:

“I am honored to announce that Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Congresswoman Nanette Barragán will serve as the three Co-Chairs of the Steering & Policy Committee for the 119th Congress. These distinguished leaders will work alongside me and the entire leadership team to ensure that every Democratic Member of the House is fully engaged and empowered to serve America.

We are fortunate that Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz will serve another term as Co-Chair of the Committee. Debbie is a champion for women, children and families and has been a leading voice in the Congress against antisemitism. As an experienced appropriator, she made history as the first-ever woman to Chair the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Subcommittee. In her work as Chair and Ranking Member, she has ensured that our veterans receive the support they need for their patriotic service to a grateful nation.

Since coming to the House as my classmate in 2013, Rep. Robin Kelly has been a committed and compassionate fighter for maternal health, common-sense gun safety and issues important to her heartland state as an active member of the Energy and Commerce Committee. As a Co-Chair of the Congressional Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Congresswoman Kelly has taken on gun manufacturers and passionately promoted the need for America to combat the gun violence epidemic with the fierce urgency of now. Rep. Kelly has also successfully represented a district with large urban, suburban and rural communities for more than a decade, meeting the needs of all of her constituents.

Rep. Nanette Barragán is a tenacious advocate for hardworking families in her district and throughout the nation. As the daughter of Mexican immigrants and the youngest of 11 children, Nanette knows firsthand the struggles and aspirations of everyday Americans and the working class. Through her work on the Energy and Commerce Committee, she has been a strong advocate for decisively addressing the climate crisis. As the current Chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, Nanette has worked with all corners of the House Democratic Caucus on issues of importance to the Latino community in the People’s House.

Under the leadership of these three talented Co-Chairs, the new Steering & Policy Committee will begin its work tomorrow at 9 a.m. as House Democrats organize in advance of the 119th Congress.”
