LEADER JEFFRIES STATEMENT ON REP. JERRY NADLER

Washington, DC – Today, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries released the following statement after Rep. Nadler announced he will not seek re-election as Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee:

Throughout his nearly five decades in elected office, Congressman Jerry Nadler has been a champion for civil rights and a relentless fighter for justice. Only in America could the Brooklyn-born son of a Jewish chicken farmer become Chairman of one of the most powerful committees in the United States Congress. Jerry’s strong Jewish roots and deeply ingrained values have consistently motivated his commitment to fighting against discrimination of all kinds.

I have had the opportunity to serve alongside Jerry as part of the New York delegation and on the House Judiciary Committee, where he has been a mentor and an inspiration to myself and countless others. As our Dean, he has kept the needs of New Yorkers at the forefront of his service in Congress. During his time as Chairman and Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee, Jerry has been a relentless defender of the fundamental promise of equality for all and has ensured that no one—even the President of the United States—is above the law.

I am grateful for Jerry’s years of leadership on this important committee and look forward to our continued work together to defend the freedoms of hardworking American taxpayers. His experience will be invaluable as we chart the path forward.
