LEADER JEFFRIES SECURES $850,000 FOR NYCHA SUMNER HOUSES
Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn – House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08) announced that he secured $850,000 for security upgrades at NYCHA’s Sumner Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn through the government funding law. The federal funds will be used to upgrade security system components across the complex.
“We know that there are a variety of challenges that need to be met in terms of the housing needs of the people who live here in Sumner and all across public housing developments throughout the city of New York. It shouldn’t only be gated communities in exclusive suburban neighborhoods that have access to locking mechanisms that work, secure doors and/or cameras,” said House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08). “And so, fulfilling a promise that I made to TA President Adorn when we saw each other at Junior’s, I’m back and I’m not empty handed, with a check for $850,000 to upgrade the physical security infrastructure here at Sumner.”
“Everyone, no matter who they are, deserves to feel safe in their community and especially in their home,” said NYCHA CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt. “What keeps a community safe? Strong community leaders and eyes and ears on the ground. We know we have a strong leader in the Congressman, and Tenant Association President Ms. DuBose and now we are going to have more tools to keep Sumner safe.”
“I’m happy to be here today receiving this funding. We’re going to get these cameras because it’s going to hopefully make us safer around here—because it’s about safety for these residents,” said TA President Adorn Dubose “I am thankful to Leader Jeffries, because without this funding and his support, it wouldn’t be possible.”
NYCHA is the largest public housing authority in the country, and approximately 1 in 17 New Yorkers is a NYCHA resident. Security upgrades at Sumner Houses will include the installation of CCTV cameras, central monitoring systems, secured entrance doors and an intercom system.
