DNAinfo: Pratt Post Office Finds New Home in Bed-Stuy, Local Pols Say
BROOKLYN — The Pratt Post Office has secured a new location after being forced to leave its former building, which was sold to developers in 2012, local politicians announced.
The new outpost, five blocks east of its prior location, will have full retail services, enabling customers to buy stamps and packaging material and mail letters and parcels.
The 4,150-square-foot space at 609 Myrtle Ave., near Kent Avenue, in Bedford-Stuyvesant, is on the ground floor of a five-story, 18-unit elevator condo building owned by NAM Realty Associates, according to The Real Deal.
NAM Realty Associates could not be reached for comment. It’s not clear when the post office branch will open.
Letter carriers will not operate out of the new site, according a notice to local residents sent by Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, state Sen. Velmanette Montgomery, Assemblyman Walter Mosley and Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo.
The USPS is still seeking a spot for sorting mail for delivery, local politicians noted.
“The Congressman feels that the Post Office made the best of a tough decision,” said a spokeswoman for Jeffries. “We will work closely with [the USPS] to make sure residents get the level of mail delivery services our community deserves.”
The Post Office was forced to search for a new space for the Pratt branch when its current building, at 524 Myrtle Ave. was sold to Silverstone Property Group in late 2012. Silverstone declined to renew the post office’s lease and plans to develop a mixed-use building in its place.
The USPS did not immediately respond to an inquiry.
