Hakeem Jeffries is pushing to make the Prison Ship Martyr’s Monument into a national monument.
The 149-foot-tall monument stands atop a crypt holding the remains of some soldiers who were kept in horrific conditions on British prison ships during the Revolutionary War. More than 11,500 soldiers died in captivity on the British prison ships.
Jeffries is now making a push to make the tribute into a national monument. The designation would increase the awareness of the monument in Brooklyn and around the world, in addition to preserving the site and bringing more traffic to the borough.
The Prison Ship Martyr’s Monument Preservation Act passed in the House of Representatives and will now move to the Senate for a vote.
