Rep Jeffries' Bipartisan FIRST STEP Act Moves Forward in Senate
Recently, the Senate announced it would consider the FIRST STEP Act, a bipartisan piece of criminal justice reform legislation sponsored by Rep. Jeffries. Under his leadership, the bill passed the House of Representatives in May with overwhelming support, including from more than 70% of Democrats in the House.
The FIRST STEP Act allocates $375 million over five years in education programs, vocational skill-building and faith-based initiatives to reduce recidivism. The bill is estimated to save taxpayers $40 million in the first year alone. If passed, the FIRST STEP Act would be the largest prison reform legislation in the history of the United States.
