"The decision to stay the district court's opinion declaring the police department's stop and frisk program unconstitutional is an unfortunate departure from the long journey toward justice. The NYPD has sanctioned racial profiling during this administration in ways that violate the Fourth Amendment. Notwithstanding this judicial hiccup, communities victimized by the out of control stop and frisk program can at least take comfort that the apologists for this police tactic have to pack up by December 31."

"Throughout America, this shutdown will needlessly hurt children, civil servants who will be furloughed and without pay, veterans who courageously served our country, seniors and countless others. “House Republicans continue to put forth extreme legislative proposals that have no chance to pass the Senate or be signed into law by the President. The Tea Party dominated GOP has deliberately set in motion a government shutdown that will harm vulnerable children, seniors, working families and our economy. This conduct is shameful and Americans will suffer if blind ideology is allowed to trump constitutional responsibility.”
