Canarsie Courier: Canarsie Hosts Congress At Your Corner
Residents had a chance to bring quality of life issues to one of the community’s elected officials Saturday morning when Congressman Hakeem Jeffries and his staff were stationed outside the Canarsie Post Office.
For the most part, Jeffries addressed issues related to Hurricane Sandy and said many homeowners here are still struggling to get their lives back together. The congressman discussed the Buy It Back program, which is a state sponsored initiative for homeowners.
Jeffries also said he would like to tour the area near Fresh Creek, one of the basins of water which overflowed when Hurricane Sandy tore through the community last year. Preventing disaster from future storms is his priority and said he will join residents in the next couple of months to assess the conditions along the waterfront.
Many also took the opportunity to tell the Congressman about the poor service they experience when dealing with the post office – where he noticed a longer than acceptable line. “There has to be some accountability and we want to set up a town hall meeting with postal employees and managers to get down to the bottom of things,” he said.
