SESAC recently hosted an afternoon of music and politics when Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) visited the New York offices to talk about the Songwriter Equity Act. The bill, co-sponsored by Jeffries along with Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA), endeavors to modernize the music licensing system by updating provisions to the Copyright Act of 1976 to ensure songwriters are fairly compensated for their creative work.

In New York, there are nearly 80,000 songwriters, composers and publishers who deserve to make a good living. As the caretaker of intellectual property law, it is important for Congress to make statutory adjustments when necessary to promote creativity in America. That is what this bill seeks to accomplish.”

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries has introduced a bill to study the likelihood of making the Prison Ship Martyrs’ Monument in Fort Greene Park a National Monument. If the bill were to pass Congress, and the monument was found to have "historic interest," it would gain a spot next to the Statue of Liberty and Castle Clinton on the list of national monuments.

Ernest Peronneau strolled right into his party Sunday afternoon to celebrate his 112th birthday. The Clinton Hill resident sat next to younger women -- one 103, the other his 93-year-old cousin. But Ernest says he doesn't feel like the oldest in the group. He says he feels like a teenager. To help mark Ernest's accomplishments, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries delivered a congressional citation. And to everybody at his party he advised them to be a copycat.
